I am very touched and honoured to have received my very first blog award, from good friend and fellow RNA member Rachel Brimble. Receiving this award means sharing 7 random
facts about myself, which is a challenging prospect. This is what I have come up with:
One of my favourite meals is monkfish with garlic and new potatoes. I first ate it in a little pub at the seaside on the west coast of Ireland and I’ve loved it ever since.
I’ve been to some amazing places including The Arctic, the rainforest and on the roof of Ely Cathedral’s lantern tower.
My grandfather was a poet. I love reading poetry but I can’t write it.
I’m a big admirer of birds of prey. My favourite is the Red Kite.
When I took my Spoken English certificate at school the book I chose to read aloud from was Georgette Heyer’s The Talisman Ring. I passed with credit!
I can’t write with the TV or radio on as it interrupts my concentration but I can write listening to music.
I come from a family of gardeners. Sadly I haven’t inherited their talent!
I’m passing on this award to seven other blogs I think are great:
An honourable mention to Julie Cohen’s wonderful blog too; I know she has already been nominated!
To share the love with readers as well as bloggers, I’m offering two copies of Dauntsey Park to commenters who share a random fact about themselves here on the blog. I’ll make the drawing on Monday. Happy weekend!

Congratulations! A random fact: I cannot read or write while listening to music. I find it impossible to have music merely as a background – and if it’s music I don’t like (e,g, in a restaurant) I get irritable and cannot “just ignore it”.
Hi HJ! Are you able to eat in restaurants with taped music or do you find that too annoying? I know someone who has the same issue and she refuses to go anywhere with music playing!
Congrats Nicola!
Hmm, a random fact? I collect Victorian name brooches. Sorry, that’s a bit dull but first thing that came to mind!
I love music btw, I write with TV, radio and music playing
I don’t think it’s dull, Alison. They’re beautiful!
What a lovely award! Your random facts were interesting as well. My random fact is that my yard is a stopover spot for Monarch butterflies on their migration route to and from Mexico because of the butterfly weed and bushes I have planted there.
Dee, that is absolutely beautiful. I would love to see a monarch butterfly one day.
The writing was on the wall – for both your future careers – when the book you chose to read from was Georgette Heyer!
Grace x
Very true, Grace!
Hi Nicola, Many congratulations to you on receiving your first blog award. I enjoyed reading about your random facts. Now, as to something random about me, well I devour anything that’s to do with the history of England. My country of birth, and which I miss terribly.
BTW, I cannot read with music, tv or people talking. I need complete silence so as I can concentrate. Therefore, I always read when I go to bed.
Hi Diane! I’m just pleased that you can find a quiet place to read! Love from England x
Hi Nicola, Thank you so much. Give England a big kiss from me please. Hugs to you. xx
Congratulations!!!
random fact…..
I graduated from college at the age of 50…
it took about 8 years of night school while working full time and taking care of my 2 children, a house and yard alone. What a wonderful feeling it was to be awarded that degree!!!
That is a huge accomplishment! Congrats!
It is indeed fabulous, Betty. Congratulations!
A random fact about me? I have more books than pictures of my kids. Lol!
LOL, Brandy! That is a great random fact!
Hi Nicola! Congrats on the award. You definitely deserve it. And thanx so much for passing it on to me. I really appreciate it. ☺
